Tapiola Sinfonietta has appointed composer Sebastian Fagerlund as Artist in Residence for the 2021–2022 season. During his residency, the orchestra will perform five of his works, three of which will be world premieres commissioned by the Tapiola Sinfonietta.
In autumn 2021, the Tapiola Sinfonietta will premiere Fagerlund’s flute concerto Terral, with Sharon Bezaly as soloist. In spring 2022, this will be followed by the chamber symphony Auroral and a piano trio not yet completed.
Fagerlund’s earlier output is represented on the programme with the guitar concerto Transit and the octet Autumn Equinox. The Tapiola Sinfonietta will be recording both the new orchestral works and the octet for the BIS label in spring 2022.
Sebastian Fagerlund is one of the most prominent European composers of our time. His works have been performed by major orchestras around the world. He often addresses fundamental questions of existence in his music, and his strong sense of musicianship and virtuoso treatment of his musical material conjure up a drama for the listener where a powerful idiom combines with a vivid and intense dialogue.
“I have always been inspired in my writing by contacts and collaborations with musicians and other artists. The Tapiola Sinfonietta is known as an exceptionally diverse and broad-minded orchestra, and I find it truly inspiring to be entering into cooperation with this unique ensemble as its composer-in-residence. I am looking forward to our musical journey together and an exciting dialogue that I trust will yield new experiences and impulses for myself, for the orchestra and for audiences,” says Fagerlund.
An advance sample of Fagerlund’s work will be provided with a performance of his Partita in the online concert ‘Serenade to spring’ given by the Tapiola Sinfonietta on 13 May 2021.
The full programme of the Tapiola Sinfonietta for autumn 2021 will be posted on the orchestra’s website on 21 May 2021.
