The Tapiola Sinfonietta, conducted by Sir Roger Norrington, releases a unique complete recording of the symphonies of Robert Schumann on YouTube

Norrington gives a sonorously full-blooded and energetic yet relaxed reading of repertoire that he clearly loves with all his heart. The musicians of the Tapiola Sinfonietta appear to enjoy working with the jovial yet demanding maestro and perform at their usual level of excellence.” Hufvudstadsbladet, 15 Sep 2019.

These videos show a conductor with a long and distinguished career at work, captivating and good-humoured. Sir Roger Norrington needs no score: he knows these symphonies by heart, down to the smallest detail.

This set of videos, recorded at concerts given at the Espoo Cultural Centre in Finland on 12–13 September 2019, comprises Robert Schumann’s Symphonies nos. 1, 2, 4 and 3 and brief introductions given by Sir Roger, explaining the historical context of each symphony. The introductions are provided with subtitles in English and Finnish.

The performances demonstrate Sir Roger’s profound familiarity with performance practices of the Viennese Classical era, which he also refers to in his introductions. There is only minimal vibrato, the tempos are brisk and the phrasing is appropriate. The impression of authenticity is reinforced by the fact that the Tapiola Sinfonietta is almost exactly the same size as an ordinary orchestra of that era.
