Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn were close friends. Schumann described Mendelssohn as “an unforgettable man” after they first met in Leipzig in 1835. Schumann was a great admirer of Mendelssohn, who was one year his senior, and being an early developer was regarded by Schumann as a mentor. Mendelssohn supported Schumann’s career by conducting his music frequently. Living within walking distance of each other in Leipzig, the two men spent much time together, playing chamber music and discussing musical matters besides dining or playing billiards or chess.
