The Tapiola Sinfonietta performs major 20th-century works with Artist in Association Ryan Bancroft. Sergej Prokofiev looked to the past, specifically the 18th century and the works of Haydn, in his first symphony completed in 1917, known as the ‘Classical Symphony’. Kurt Weill, best known for his cabaret music, expressed the oppressive mood of the 1930s in his Symphony no. 2. Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto no. 1 is a favourite in its genre and is here performed by Brannon Cho from the USA, winner of multiple competitions and known in Finland as the winner of the Paulo Cello Competition in 2018.
